REVIEW: There's Some Spooky Stuff in Silent House, But It's Mostly Just Arthouse Wigwaggery
Silent House is not just a horror film but a Very Important Piece of Social Commentary, as youll see when you get to the movies third-act twist. In other words, its not asking you to watch a terrified womans face for some 90 minutes -- in sort-of real time, no less -- without an allegedly good reason. This is good-for-you, arthouse-style horror. Which doesnt mean its necessarily any good. The gimmick goes like this: A young woman named Sarah (Elizabeth Olsen) is shown rattling around her familys lake house in a series of long takes designed to give the effect of real time. We see her wandering by the water as if lost in a dream; coming back to the house to greet her father, John (Adam Trese), whos fixing up the joint with an eye toward selling it; being puzzled when a mysterious dark-haired beauty around her own age, Sophia (played by Julia Taylor Ross), shows up at the front door, reminding her of all the fun times the two had as kids -- Sarah cant seem to remember a thing. But she does tell Sophia, in an extremely obvious bit of horror-helper dialogue, The phone lines arent set up and our cells dont work out here -- information that will later, of course, prove useful for someone to know. Other stuff happens: For instance, Uncle Peter (Eric Sheffer Stevens), whos helping his brother and Sarah fix up the house, eyes her with somewhat inappropriate lasciviousness and says, Look at you -- I cant get over how grown-up you are. Then Uncle Peter takes off, and Sarah and her dad are left to wander the inky shadows of the old homestead, their faces illuminated only by the camping lanterns they carry around. Minutes later -- or is it hours? -- Sarah hears a noise upstairs. Dad goes up to investigate, and all seems well until theres an ominous thunk. Much of the rest of the picture is an extended study of Sarahs face, which is more often than not twisted into a mask of fear and dread. It takes forever for things to start happening in Silent House. And when they do, you wish they wouldnt. The picture is a remake of the Uruguayan film La Casa Muda, directed by Gustavo Hernndez, which made a mild splash at Cannes a few years back on the basis of the one-shot gimmick. Chris Kentis -- who also made the 2003 shark-sadism drama Open Water -- and Laura Lau have done the refashioning here, and whatever the movies flaws may be, there are stretches that are suitably suspenseful and atmospheric. Thats thanks in part to the pictures sound design: When we hear footsteps treading perilously close to Sarah, we can tell the wearer is shod in heavy boots with rubbery soles; the sound of a discarded bottle rolling across an uneven wood floor is hollow and mournful; now and then the house groans ever so slightly, as if in denial of the horrors its hiding within. But then theres the music, courtesy of Nathan Larson, which isnt really music, but more of a low, migrainey hum. And poor Elizabeth Olsen: Her face is luminous and compelling by itself -- she doesnt have to do much. But she has too many unbroken minutes to fill in Silent House: One second shes grimacing, the next shes practically biting her wrist to keep from screaming, the next shes back to grimacing again. Please! Theres only so much an actress can do to fill up these endless long takes. In the end, Silent House just comes off as a highly accomplished bit of arthouse wigwaggery -- and a reminder that judicious editing, and not languorous love from the camera, is the actors truest friend. Jane Alexander Tackles Edward Albee's 'The Lady From Dubuque'
Jane Alexander Tackles Edward Albee's 'The Lady From Dubuque' By Simi Horwitz March 1, 2012 Photo by Joan Marcus Jane Alexander in "The Lady from Dubuque" Imagine playing an amorphous figure who may or may not represent impending doom. Not that the title character, Elizabeth, is delineated as such in Edward Albee's "The Lady From Dubuque," now running Off-Broadway at the Pershing Square Signature Center. But she's clearly on another plane, says the patrician Jane Alexander, who's tackling the part in the intense drama centering on Jo, a dying woman (Laila Robins), and her tormented relationships with her spouse and their friends. After a raucous evening, mysterious strangers Elizabeth and Oscar (Peter Francis James) arrive, seemingly out of nowhere, to soothe Jo. "Edward says you cannot play a character as a metaphor," Alexander says. "Edward won't define her, not even in private. So I play it as I feel it, as a flesh-and-blood woman, who's there as a comforter. That's what Jo needs. Edward says reality is defined by what we need."Often playing aristocratic women, Alexander has had a stellar career in theater, film, and television and garnered a shelf-ful of awards along the way. She also served as the chair of the National Endowment for the Arts from 1993 to 1997. A lifelong activistfrom civil rights to anti-Vietnam protests to feminismAlexander now focuses her attention on environmental issues, with a special interest in conserving natural habitats for wildlife.Though she never envisioned a life in government, Alexander had her sights set on acting when she was growing up in Boston. But to accommodate her father, who firmly believed everyone should have a fallback career, Alexander majored in math as well as theater at Sarah Lawrence College. Computers were beginning to appear, and Alexander thought if acting didn't pan out she could work as a programmer. Her junior year abroad at the University of Edinburgh, however, changed the course of her life. She performed with the school's drama club, and her talents were touted by the local papers. No longer open to pursuing backup gigs, she dropped out of college and forged ahead with acting. "My poor dad," Alexander recalls. "But he told me to go ahead with it and gave me two years."As it turned out, within that deadline she was working as an actor. Throughout her career, she honed her craft and played an array of parts in regional theaters. But a pivotal momentindeed, an artistic epiphanyoccurred when she was starring in "Saint Joan" at the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. Her future husband, Edwin Sherin, was directing. At the time she had been studying with a teacher in NY"who will remain nameless," she chortles. "Ed said to me, 'There's only one problem with your acting. You can't be seen, and you can't be heard.' So I jettisoned the method I had been working on and listened to Ed. I learned how to put more emphasis on the vocal and took ownership of my roles."Her professional watershed was starring opposite James Earl Jones in "The Great White Hope," playing a black boxer's white mistress. It was launched at the Arena Stage and moved on to Broadway in 1968 before becoming a major film. The production established the careers of both actors. "We both got Tony Awards, Academy Award nominations, and were off and sailing in all three mediums," she remarks, sounding thrilled even in retrospect. " 'The Great White Hope' was remarkable especially during the height of the civil rights movement. There were 63 actors in the cast, playing over 200 roles, and more than half of them were African-American. The audience was diverse. It was incredible to be part of that."A Proactive CareerNever one to rest on her laurels, Alexander decidedafter close to 20 years of working steadilyshe needed to become proactive and produce her own work. It was not simply to give herself choice roles: "I felt there were stories I wanted to tell," she says. The projects she produced and starred in included "Calamity Jane" for CBS and "A Marriage: Georgia O'Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz" for PBS.But mounting self-generated work was not easy, and Alexander soon tired of the relentless struggle. "Being in Hollywood when you're a woman in your late 40s was very tough, especially then," she points out. "There was a lot of pressure and humiliation. Many of the producers didn't know who I was."Interestingly, for mature screenwriters, she felt there was far more discrimination than for female actors of a certain age. "Producers were known to have said, 'Don't send me scripts written by writers over 35' or some other young age," she recalls. "The only discrimination I felt as an actor is that there have always been more roles for mature men than mature women in film." A major shift in Alexander's life took place when she was tapped by President Bill Clinton to helm the NEA. It was the capstone of a lifetime dedicated to progressive movements. Still, she was not fully prepared for what came with her new post."I became the focus of media attention," she says. "It was during the time of the NEA Four, Andres Serrano, and Robert Mapplethorpe." This was a brouhaha surrounding the public funding of four controversial performance artists and two equally provocative visual artists. "I became the target during the Newt Gingrich Congress," she continues. "During those four years I was shifted into a political arena."Alexander does not regret her role at the NEA. Indeed, she met fascinating artists and politicians who never would have crossed her path otherwise, she says. "And I have wonderful stories to tell about Newt Gingrich." Still, it took her close to seven years to be viewed as an actor again and make the transition back to the stage. She likens acting to riding a bike. "You never forget it," she says. Alexander has indeed had a fortunate career. There are no roles she's dying to do. She concludes, "I made that list when I was 16, and I've now done most of them.""The Lady From Dubuque" will play through March 25 at the Pershing Square Signature Center, 480 W. 42nd St., NYC. 'RoboCop' Reboot: This Is One Way You are Doing This
by Joel Hanek With little-known relating to this aside from an expectation that every summary of this movie includes the word "gritty," the "RoboCop" reboot has loomed over us for many days however with little information. With Jose Padilha within the helm (a director who's no stranger to action and police corruption as noticed in his "Elite Squad" films) and film author Nick Schenk ("Gran Torino") aboard the project, the film is loaded with lots of chance of an amazing adaptation. But unless of course obviously it finds a perfect combination of action, allegory, and camping that Paul Verhoeven concocted, there are many possible ways to fall flat. This is why we're here to help. Keep reading through through for techniques to properly reboot "RoboCop" for just about any modern! WHY We Would Like IT: I'll admit I used to be a late comer for the original 1987 Verhoeven sci-fi classic, however when I healed that absence from my film repertoire, it instantly increased being among my faves. Sure, searching back the outcomes and anachronistic ideas for future years inside the eighties have parts feel hokey, nevertheless the story is timeless: corporate corruption, police corruption, distrusting the device, and meaning what's right. The 99% crowd can easily get behind the styles in regards to the blue collared robot within the Rustbelt. Aside from everything: you'll find cyborgs, some awesome murder-bots that could take advantage of the CGI facelift, and the amount of gore inside it'll make even Eli Roth as well as the Human Centipede him/herself blush. Who'll PLAY DETROIT'S FAVORITE CYBORG ENFORCER? Officer Alex Murphy can be a tricky role: at first, he's the over-the-top, almost naive, do-gooder so when he's transformed to the RoboCop he's the stoic face that in some manner still instructions a monosyllabic charm. While Michael Fassbender's title remains thrown around since the successor to Peter Weller's metallic exoskeleton, the newest murmer within the rumorsphere points to "The Killing" star Joel Kinnaman available the role. Both of these males could answer the telephone call to duty - why don't you participate in the "Everyman" area of the role - also called, a non-action star? Someone while using cold authority from the Michael Shannon or perhaps the familiar dashing scowl of Jon Hamm. To juxtapose the ruled attitude of RoboCop, the film's villians are crazy and embellished to fill the region. Why not choose an actress who'll appreciate it and participate in it large? The middle-American druglord Clarence Boddicker may be carried out by someone who's always round the fringe of shouting on-screen, as being a Phillip Seymour Hoffman or John C. Reilly. Products To Keep In Mind WHEN Restarting: Stay away from the CGI. Certain areas of Robocop may be up-to-date getting a sophistication and fluidity that CGI offers such as the Erection dysfunction-209 robots that stalk Delta City - however, if it calls for the cyborg themselves, leave that for the costume (basically: don't "Eco-friendly Lantern" that certain, everybody). Officer Anne Lewis. Leave her with a little more character development, please! As well as the adoration for Verhoeven, please include this somewhere inside the movie! The inevitable reboot treads heavily round the hallowed ground within our beloved classic movies. Since Hollywood's prone to destroy everything you've ever loved anyway, let's ride together with the 4 Horsemen and embrace the apocalypse within our movie nostalgia! Tune into Reboot for further sardonic stupidity, or subject yourself to it under your own accord by utilizing @joelhanek on Twitter!

SAG-AFTRA union would ease future combos
Future union mergers are going to become far easier if the proposed combo of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists goes through.SAG and AFTRA will mail out ballots on Feb. 27 to 120,000 SAG members and 70,000 AFTRA members, who include actors, broadcasters, DJs, singers and dancers, with a tabulation date of March 30. To be approved, the merger must receive at least 60% of the votes from each union.Should that merger agreement be approved, new mergers would have to be approved by the 60% of the voting membership or by 60% of the delegates of the new SAG-AFTRA. That means future combos with such performer unions as Actors Equity would not be subject to direct approval by the members of SAG-AFTRA. That's a key provision within the proposal, since a previous merger was derailed in 2003 by SAG members. In that contest, 58% of SAG voters backed the proposal -- less than 2,000 votes short of meeting the 60% requirement. The first convention with elected delegates of the new SAG-AFTRA would be held in September 2013. In response to the question of changing the requirements for future merger approvals, SAG and AFTRA said in a statement that the process remains a democratic one."Convention delegates are members, who are duly elected by members to represent them," SAG and AFTRA said. "A vote by convention is a vote by the membership. Democracy can take many forms, particularly when an important question requires informed democracy. Additionally, the language already exists in the AFTRA constitution."Merger proponents have long asserted that combining unions is a logical response to the increasing power of the mega-conglomerates and contended that the combined unions will have more bargaining clout. Merger opponents, who lost power at SAG in recent years, have argued that SAG will lose its unique character as a performers union and that the combined entity won't have more power at the negotiating table. In 2003, the merged union would have been called the Alliance of Intl. Media Artists, which may have been a factor in the defeat. The Actors Equity Council unanimously backed the "consolidation and affiliation" proposal in 2003. Approximately two-thirds of Equity's 45,000 members are also in SAG and/or AFTRA. The American Federation of Musicians and the Intl. Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees also endorsed the 2003 merger plan.SAG national board approved the merger proposal on Jan. 27 and AFTRA's board followed the next day. The unions posted the merger documents on their sites last week and will begin holding member meetings about the merger on Thursday. Contact Dave McNary at dave.mcnary@variety.com

Unluckily on her, she's the catalyst for any mass break-out, regardless of the fortress' whole suposed "impregnable" factor. And also the only guy who are able to get her to safety? Pearce's smart-ass badass Lizard Plissken Snow, that's who."Don't misunderstand me,Inch he states. "It is a dream vacation. Time passes into space, I recieve within the maximum security nuthouse, work through all of the psychos, save the president's daughter if she's not dead already... I am thrilled that you'd think about me."The final clip was large the loop within the prison, but that one gives much more of a peek at the carnage outdoors, with space battles along with a destructive-searching bike / vehicle freeway chase.Lock-Out, because it shall henceforth be known here, is co-compiled by Luc Besson, and reaches us through his Europacorp (Taken, the Transporter films, last year's Colombiana). Image transformation?
Regardless of how much entrepreneurs try, there is nothing sexy about digital privileges management. Once used like a tool to obtain customers thinking about new methods to electronically access entertainment, the program biz and chipmakers have basically quit on DRM after recognizing individuals three letters were viewed as getting an adverse connotation. Annually after Apple released its Insider anti-piracy technology, the task of distinguishing itself from the polarizing predecessor, digital privileges management, continues. While Apple and digital lockers for example UltraViolet must assure marketers their submissions are safe, customers prefer to seek the assurance of the user-friendly experience -- they would like to have the ability to make use of the software instead of understanding how it safeguards this content they are attempting to access, tech firms have determined. Apple's iTunes store used DRM to limit the amount of products which a bought file might be performed. The internet shop is constantly on the make use of the technology because of its digital rental service, restricting how lengthy a relevant video could be utilized. While DRM provided a particular degree of protection for music files, it had been belittled for affecting having to pay clients, who could only bet additional numbers files using specific software as well as on a particular quantity of products. Apple continues to be careful to distance Insider, made to safeguard full 1080p high-definition digital movies, from DRM. Insider continues to be seen by some as a kind of DRM, which association brings by using it potentially negative implications of suppressing the consumer experience. "I believe whenever you draw an evaluation to something similar to typical DRM, it assumes a connotation that may mean various things to various people," stated Chris Cukor, marketing director for Apple Insider. "Whenever we discuss Insider to clients so when we discuss it towards the public, it is an finish-to-finish content protection solution." Apple released your blog publish addressing the topic on Jan. 4, 2011, right after the announcement from the content protection feature. The publish compared Insider to "an armored truck transporting the film from the web for your display." Site visitors regularly said around the publish throughout every season until as lately as November, unfavorably likening we've got the technology to DRM. The publish was up-to-date two times to explain details and rebut criticisms. Although this may be seen as problem of semantics, it's implications for customers and digital movie marketers. Even though many customers want assurance of the uninhibited experience, individuals supplying this content are centered on Insider's effectiveness. "Apple Insider produces additional content protection past the DRM to safeguard the recording signal from delivery towards the screen," stated Thomas Gewecke, leader of Warner Bros. Digital Distribution. "This enables us to provide our greatest value content for example 1080p HD to less secure platforms such as the PC." UltraViolet has additionally been careful to think about the perspective of customers playing files on multiple products. The Ultra violet extendable enables customers to join up as much as 12 Ultra violet-supported products and tell six people. These Apple blog publish also noted that chipmakers support High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), utilized by Blu-ray. Cukor described HDCP because the technology that can take a "local file and shows it on the panel, either in your laptop panel or perhaps your monitor or Television set." Warner Bros.' live-action "Akira" remake has hit another speedbump on its lengthy route to getting production began. Studio verifies it's shut lower pre-production in the Vancouver offices because the film's creative team reworks the script hoping to create the $90 million budget lower to some number more appropriate for WB executives. Although the sci-fi epic has been through a number of rewrites, including costly re-dos from Steve Kloves and David James Kelly, associates say a brand new author will most likely be triggered to utilize helmer Jaume Collet-Sera and producers Jennifer Davisson Killoran and Andrew Lazar within the next two days. It has been a lengthy string of stops and begins for any live-action "Akira," that has been in development in the studio because it acquired the privileges towards the Japanese manga classic in 2008. Albert Hughes came onto direct this past year, simply to drop from the project within the summer time.
